To date there is no data on indirect studies based on signals left by huemul the protected Shoonem (APS ) (Smith- Flueck and Flueck 2001) area . Studies in other areas have used the same method , but also compared it with another kind of index for determine the population density of huemul. This allows a determination comparative to estimate the population size of huemul in the APS .
The basic method is to compare the effort of the researcher : man / days of walking transects and the number of groups found feces . This allows a comparison Relative between various studies and sites.
In the Los Glaciares National Park population nucleus was considered more important 5.6 times less stool groups with the same research effort in the field versus the result obtained for the APS (Table 1), and with a minimum density of 0.45 estimated huemules/100 ha ( Serret 1995). For the Perito Moreno National Park was estimated density 1.24 minimum huemul/100 has , but with 20-30 % less stool groups found on effort in the area of APS ( Serret and Borghiani 1998). Therefore, using these studies as an index can be deduced that the revised area ASP contains a density of 1.5-1.6 huemules/100 has within forests.
The total area considered huemul is still used by about 32’400 ha, to the border with Chile ( Fig. 1). Discounting the Andean high – rocky surface above the meadow and Mirror Lake are about 19’950 has huemul habitat . At a density of 1.5 huemul/km2 have a population of 300 huemules . Considering the increasing pressures during the last 15-20 years in this sector of Lake La Plata , it is possible that there was a population decline in this part such that the population should go between 150 and 200 individuals.
The size of this population also has the support based on dead animal remains effort found by H / D , exceeding 6.5 times the Perito Moreno National Park in Secondly having produced animal remains.
